An instruction for direct interpretation of LZ77-compressed programs
نویسنده
چکیده
A new instruction adapts LZ77 compression for use inside running programs. The instruction economically references and reuses code fragments that are too small to package as conventional subroutines. The compressed code is interpreted directly, with neither prior nor on-the-fly decompression. Hardware implementations seem plausible and could benefit both memoryconstrained and more conventional systems.

Instruction Selection for Compilers that Target Architectures with Echo Instructions
Echo Instructions have recently been introduced to allow embedded processors to provide runtime decompression of LZ77-compressed programs at a minimal hardware cost compared to other recent decompression schemes. As embedded architectures begin to adopt echo instructions, new compiler techniques will be required to perform the compression step. This paper describes a novel instruction selection...
متن کاملImproving Energy Efficiency and Reducing Code Size with RISC-V Compressed
Delivering the instruction stream can be the largest source of energy consumption in a processor, yet loosely-encoded RISC instruction sets are wasteful of instruction bandwidth. Aiming to improve the performance and energy efficiency of the RISC-V ISA, this thesis proposes RISC-V Compressed (RVC), a variable-length instruction set extension. RVC is a superset of the RISC-V ISA, encoding the mo...
متن کاملSolving Classical String Problems on Compressed Texts
Here we study the complexity of string problems as a function of the size of a program that generates input. We consider straight-line programs (SLP), since all algorithms on SLP-generated strings could be applied to processing LZ-compressed texts. The main result is a new algorithm for pattern matching when both a text T and a pattern P are presented by SLPs (so-called fully compressed pattern...
متن کاملMapping Stream Programs into the Compressed Domain
Due to the high data rates involved in audio, video, and signal processing applications, it is imperative to compress the data to decrease the amount of storage used. Unfortunately, this implies that any program operating on the data needs to be wrapped by a decompression and re-compression stage. Re-compression can incur significant computational overhead, while decompression swamps the applic...
متن کاملEfficient Execution of Compressed Programs
EFFICIENT EXECUTION OF COMPRESSED PROGRAMS by Charles Robert Lefurgy Chair: Trevor Mudge Code compression is the technique of using data compression to reduce the program memory size for memory-limited, embedded computers. For system-on-a-chip designs, this reduces the system die area which lowers die cost. After compilation, the binary (native code) program is compressed and stored in the embe...
